Message from the Pfizer Ltd Board

Good Track Record

We are happy to note that, against a background of rapidly expanding sites and employee population, over the last ten years we have:

  • Produced over 90% of the energy (electricity and steam) for our Sandwich site using clean, high efficiency, Combined Heat and Power (CHP)
  • Progressively introduced externally accredited EHS Management Systems
  • Enjoyed a good safety record including that related to the major construction projects we have undertaken
  • Invested significantly in improved environmental protection equipment including a wastewater treatment facility and a state-of-the-art pilot plant
  • Established a strong and high performing Green Chemistry Programme
  • Maintained a strong community outreach programme
site

Recently we are proud to note that:

    In 2007

  • Our Carbon Awareness programme resulted in a 10% reduction of energy use during our Easter and Christmas “Switch-Off” campaigns.
  • We have again reduced use of the solvent dichloromethane in our laboratories resulting in a reduction of over 56% since 2005.
  • We have fully commissioned and are operating additional technology to further reduce solvent releases from our manufacturing facility at Sandwich.

Constantly Moving Challenge

In common with many other aspects of our business, we recognise that EHS challenges do not stand still. Our objective is to seek continual improvement, as well as maintaining the high standards we have already achieved.

Over the last few years we have been using the techniques of formalised EHS Management Systems to identify and prioritise areas for improvement and, where appropriate, set ourselves EHS objectives and targets for continual improvement. At our Sandwich site this has included gaining external accreditation (ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001) of our management systems both within our Manufacturing and Research and Development operations. Although we will primarily focus on EHS matters in this report, we realise our impact and influence extends beyond these to include both the community and financial aspects of our business. All these areas (Environmental, Community and Financial) are of interest to a variety of interested parties or stakeholders.

With that in mind, we will be embarking on an extensive stakeholder engagement programme during the course of 2007/08. This programme will give our stakeholders the opportunity to engage directly with us on issues of interest and concern about Pfizer, including the way we do business and our environmental, economic and social impacts.

In the meantime, we would welcome any comments or questions you may have regarding the information we have published in this report.
